Exploring Children’s use of generative AI in School and Elsewhere
Generative AI technologies have rapidly entered young people’s lives, from ChatGPT to image generators and beyond.
Does generative AI get used in the same way at home and school?
Where do young people really learn how to use generative AI?
Project CAISE will work with secondary school students aged 12-14, their schools and their families to understand how AI fits into every part of everyday life.
What We’re Exploring
How do different contexts – people, environments, technologies – shape young people’s AI use?
We’re examining how social relationships, personal knowledge, physical spaces, school rules, home expectations and the technologies themselves all work together to shape how young people experience and use generative AI.
What aspects of AI literacy matter in young people’s real lives?
Rather than assuming we know what it is to be literate in AI (and other digital technologies), we’re working with young people to understand what knowledge, skills, and understanding actually matter in their daily encounters with AI.
How can AI literacy tools better reflect the complexity of young people’s experiences?
By working with young people to explore and detail out their AI use, we can suggest ways that educational frameworks, guidance materials, and support systems can be more effective and relevant.
